The H&S situation in Ireland:
Back in August 2004 Minister for Labour Affairs, Mr Frank Fahey T.D., reminded Irish Industry and Commerce
that every aspect of a worker's health needs to be protected and that the personal health of each employee would be at risk without full implementation of a sound
H&S policy. There also would be economic penalties to non-complying companies if changes were not implemented. At that time occupational injury and ill health were
costing the economy about �1.6 billion annually and business about �1 billion resulting from the 1.4 million days lost every year.
The Minister reminded industry that good health and safety consultants must become an integral part of all modern
well-run companies just as management, financial and quality control play their part in any successful enterprise.
The Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005:
Health and Safety Act 2005 requires that every employer do everything he or she can to
ensure the health and safety of employees. Health and Safety issues require a balance between imposing duties, encouraging better consultation, providing
better prevention and increasing fines and penalties. The Act also requires that employees comply with relevant safety and health laws and do not engage
in improper behaviour or do anything that would place themselves or others at risk.
